Breaking Down the Science of Sleep Cycles

Many people think they feel like zombies in the morning from sleeping badly because of "diet" or "stress".

That's not exactly true and one action can almost immediately resolve zombie exhaustion before it gets crippling.

The causes of bad sleep are specific to which sleep cycle they happen in.  We've put everything that we think you should know in a Sleep Cycles Guide about the causes of bad sleep in each sleep cycle and how to get fast relief.  Just contact us and we can send it to you.

Here at ESC Mattress Center we have over thirty years experience custom fitting people for the perfect sleep system to help our clients with intense exhaustion or sleep deprivation.

If you want to solve major exhaustion or sleep deprivation we can show you the causes of bad sleep in each sleep cycle and the easiest, most cost effective way to fix it immediately.

First, a full night of sleep is made up of many sleep cycles.  Most adults get five to six sleep cycles a night.  Each cycle is made up of sleep phases that are biologically in a specific order; Light Sleep, Deep Sleep, and lastly REM Sleep.

  • Light Sleep is responsible for memory, learning and motor skills (among other things).
  • Deep Sleep is responsible for physical healing.
  • REM Sleep is responsible for mental healing and dreaming.

For survival, bodies are hard-wired to prioritize physical healing over mental healing, so if we don't get enough Deep Sleep we automatically won't get enough REM Sleep either.  That is detrimental to our overall health in the short term and long term.  Sleep Deprivation can lead to serious physical and mental decline very quickly.  Basically, our body and mind start to deteriorate on us in a terrifying way.

Second, here are the common causes of bad sleep in each of the three sleep phases.

Light Sleep

Difficulty falling asleep and the most common cause of bad sleep in the Light Sleep phase are: tossing and turning on and uncomfortable mattress, stress, alcohol, being to stimulated at bedtime, or digestive problems.

Deep Sleep

Since Deep Sleep is the body's healing phase; sleep deprivation is most often from physical pain (like body parts "falling asleep" from pressure), serious health problems, or an uncomfortable mattress or pillow that magnifies pain.  This is terrifyingly important because if a body can't heal itself, it's a serious mess.

REM Sleep

Common causes to losing REM Sleep are the same health and mattress problems as Deep Sleep as well as nightmares that can wake us up.

Can sleep supplements or medication fix sleep problems?  Absolutely not!  They can only help falling asleep faster, but they never fix any of the actual causes of bad sleep.

While many causes of bad sleep are complex to fix and require either a doctor's help or major habit and lifestyle changes, the single easiest, fastest, and cheapest way to fix the majority of sleep deprivation issues is with the correct mattress and sleep system.

If you'd like a Sleep Cycles Guide that gives you some direct instructions on how to figure out which sleep phase you are losing sleep in, and exactly how to fix it, just get in touch and we'll send it over at no cost, or swing by and we can custom-fit you for the perfect sleep system today.
