Benefits Of Adjustable Bases

Adjustable bases add a whole new level of health, comfort, and functionality to your mattress.

The entertainment position is excellent for reading, watching tv, gaming, breakfast in bed, etc. The head of the base can take you up almost ninety degrees, to whatever position is most convenient for the activity you are engaging in.

Now, imagine that you were able to help reduce the symptoms that cause your poor sleep, get the comfort and support you need, reduce your pain and get the great night’s sleep you deserve; the rest and rejuvenation that your body needs. Because that is what sleeping in the wellness position (head and feet raised) has the potential to provide.

If you sleep on a flat mattress and have difficulty getting or staying comfortable, you toss and turn, or wake up frequently throughout the night. It may be worth considering whether an adjustable bed is a better alternative for you. A good night’s sleep can be challenging to get when you:

  1. Have sleep apnea
  2. Snore (or your partner does)
  3. Are stuffed up due to allergies
  4. Have other breathing issues
  5. Experience acid reflux
  6. Suffer from vertigo
  7. Are trying to recover from back surgery
  8. Suffer from chronic back pain
  9. Have hip pain
  10. Have Restless Leg Syndrome
  11. Toss . and turn at night
  12. Have poor circulation

And more…

An adjustable base allows your upper body to rest at a slight incline and your legs raised, in an ergonomically correct position, with support under your knees, so they bend at a slight angle.

Sleeping with your head raised can help you with numbers 1 through 6 on the list above while sleeping with your legs raised can help with 7 through 12. Sleeping in the wellness position takes the pressure off of your low back and hips, allows the muscles in your spine relax, and puts your body in its natural position.

An Adjustable base has the potential to help anyone who is more comfortable in an inclined position, like sitting in a recliner, as opposed to lying flat. In addition to those listed, the wellness position can also help with many other back conditions as well. For some, sleeping in a more upright position is just more comfortable than lying flat. Some lower back and neck issues may be less aggravated while in an adjusted position. Some examples are:

  1. Joint conditions like Shoulder arthritis, hip arthritis – Sleeping with your head and feet inclined not only keeps you from rolling to your side and adding pressure to those areas, but also can relieve pressure in the low back and hip area, in general.
  2. Degenerative Spondylolisthesis – support under the knees can reduce some of the pain and discomfort in the low back. This can make it easier to sleep through the night
  3. Osteoarthritis – If you suffer from osteoarthritis in the spine or facet joint arthritis, you most likely wake up feeling stiff and sore. Sleeping adjusted can decrease joint compression and give you better support which may lessen the irritation.
  4. Spinal Stenosis – When you suffer this, you may feel more comfortable while bending forward rather than standing straight. The same applies to your mattress. Lying flat is probably less healthy for you than if you were to be in a reclining position.

Some adjustable bases come with a massage feature that helps to relax your muscles and increase circulation. The massage turns itself off after 20 to 30 minutes (depending on model), so if you fall asleep to it, it doesn’t go all night. Some people like to use the massage feature as “white noise” to help them fall asleep.

The amount of incline of your head and feet can vary, depending on your body and needs. Most couples can agree on their sleeping position. The trick is to not go too high for your partner; even a little can help. For those with medical issues that require more extreme inclines, or for couples that can’t agree, there are Split King sets that allow each of you to adjust your own side separately.

Remember, there is no “Right Bed” for everyone. We all have different bodies with different needs and preferences. Comfort and support remain vital in getting the best night’s sleep. Whatever sleep system that allows you to sleep comfortably without extra pain or stiffness is the best choice. What that means to you individually is up to you!
